Memo Arts Centre
Memo Arts Centre
Last Night a Year in Barry visited the Memo Arts Centre to Meet up with Jonathan Coombs and the cast of 'Snow Queen'. What could be more traditional at this time of year than popping along to the memo arts centre to see Billboard ensemble’s annual pantomime. This years panto is the Hans Christian Anderson classic, “The Snow Queen”. Company director for Billboard ensemble, principal and founder Jonathan Coombs is again donning the traditional “male part, panto dame”. This years creation is Queen Fanny from frankfurter! This panto has something for everyone, great songs that the kids will know and sing along too, an excellent cast and chorus fantastic costumes and scenery. We are so lucky in our town to have such great opportunities to see productions like this involving all ages from the local community. Jonathan set up BillBoard ensemble 21 years ago and with a dedicated group of volunteers, the company has grown from strength to strength. Jonathan added "it’s so important for the community to be able to see and access live theatre here at the memo arts centre there is something for everyone available here". Jonathan, Barry born and bread continues his love of the stage in his professional career working as a drama and performing arts teacher at Bryn Hafren Comprehensive school, where he passes on his passion and commitment to the arts in Barry onto his students. Jonathan trained as an actor and worked in the industry but settled back in Barry and wanted to give something back to his community, so the company was created.
Billboard Ensemble continues to grow in strength and numbers with a thriving junior section as well as the adult section, both performing musicals later on in the new year. Past members of BillBoard have gone on to make a career in the industry performing in television and west end shows. This company seems passionate about all it does from the youngest to the oldest cast Member, I saw commitment hard work and pure delight in the hours I spent back stage in this surreal panto world. Seeing the creation of such iconic characters take shape before me was an interesting and heart warming experience. I for one will be following this talented company which is here right on our door step! A Year in Barry wishes Jonathan and the cast a Merry Christmas and continued success, it is an amazing show which everyone should see. 'Break a leg'.
