John Nethercott

John Nethercott 46 years of age and has worked for Barry Town Council as a Gardener/Groundsman since 1992. It is his achievements outside of work that he will best be known for. John was born with Cerebral Palsy, and as a young man was inspired by his Sister, Judith to take up running. He joined Penarth and Dinas Running Club, and through amazing effort and hardwork started to compete in 1986. He took part in the World Youth Games in Miami in 1989, and during the same year he became the World Cross Country Champion. In the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona, John not only won the Gold Medal in the 1500 metres, but also broke the World Record, by knocking a second off the time. He also took Bronze in the 800 metres. Four years later he would again represent Great Britain at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics and on this occasion took Silver in the 800 metres and placed fourth in the 1500 metres. John is an amazing personality he is so proud of his achievements and rightly so, a gentleman well deserving of his place in 'A Year In Barry'
